NNPC/TOTAL MIT-Empowering Teachers Program. Selected cohorts of faculty members (ETT Fellows) from African universities are offered a rigorous, semester-long teaching-focused engagement through the MIT-Empowering the Teachers (MIT-ETT) program. The ETT aims to promote innovation in science and engineering education at tertiary academic institutions in Africa by exposing the ETT Fellows to cutting edge student-focused teaching approaches. Our goal is for our Fellows’ students to graduate with the skills necessary to meet the demands of the modern job market, including the ability to think critically and solve practical problems. The business partners and sponsors of the initiative are NNPC Ltd. and TotalEnergies EP Nigeria.
OVERVIEW
The Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s (MIT) MISTI (MIT International Science and Technology Initiative) is offering the MIT-Empowering the Teachers (MIT-ETT) fellowship in collaboration with the NNPC Limited and TotalEnergies Upstream Nigeria Limited (TUPNI).
The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)-ETT program gives Nigerian professors of science and engineering the opportunity to study there for a semester. The chosen fellows will watch classes in their fields of study and collaborate with an MIT faculty member to develop cutting-edge curriculum and teaching strategies that can be implemented at their home universities when they return.
Through partnerships with reputable national and international academic institutions, NNPC Limited/TUPNI hopes to enable the provision of high-quality education and thereby contribute to the socioeconomic development of Nigeria.
WHAT ARE THE SELECTION PROCESS FOR THE NNPC/TOTAL MIT-EMPOWERING TEACHERS PROGRAM
MIT-ETT will choose a number of outstanding young faculty members from Nigerian universities to spend a semester at MIT, either in the Spring 2024 (February-May 2024) or the Fall 2024 (September-December 2024). These faculty members will be from the disciplines of Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Petroleum Engineering, and Geophysics.
The chosen faculty members will witness at least two classes at MIT that are comparable to the ones they now teach (including lectures, recitations, and tutorials). They will develop fresh curriculum and pedagogical strategies for use in their own classes. They will participate in two MIT-ETT seminars each week, one of which will focus on curriculum design and the other of which will orient the faculty to MIT’s distinctive cultural practices, including online teaching, problem-solving, entrepreneurship, public speaking, and others.
The participants’ essential living, travel, and educational material costs will be covered by MIT-ETT. The winning applicants’ home universities agree to offer paid leave of absence for the duration of the MIT program.
