1. University of the Witwatersrand

6. Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University

Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University (SMU) was established when the Minister of Higher Education and Training, Dr Blade Nzimande in terms of section 20 of the Higher Education Act 1997 (Act 101 of 1997), promulgated the Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University (SMU) in the SA Government Gazette no: 37658 of 16 May 2014.

To be the benchmark institution providing holistic health sciences education that meets the health needs of the individual, the university arm to:

7. University of the Free State

The University of the Free State (UFS) has a proud history as one of the oldest, most respected institutions of higher education in South Africa. The University of Limpopo is the result of a merger between the former Medical University of Southern Africa and the University of the North, which merger occurred on 01 January 2005.

10. Walter Sisulu University

Walter Sisulu University (WSU) was established on 1 July, 2005 in terms of the Higher Education Act No. 101 of 1997, as amended.

WSU has positioned itself as a gateway institution is improving access to higher education. As a developmental, comprehensive university, WSU offers students a wealth of academic choices, articulation and mobility across the qualifications ranging from certificates to diplomas, degrees and postgraduate studies.

Strategically located within the Eastern Cape Province, WSU has a footprint of about 1,000 square kilometres across the urban and rural areas of the region.

It provides the University with the platform to engage with the drivers of development so that an appropriate programme and research mix meets the needs of the region, province and country.

WSU operates under a divisional governance and management system and has four campuses, each headed by a Campus Rector.
