Background

History of the Mandela Scholarship Fund

On March 12, 1999, his Excellency President Nelson Mandela of South Africa received an Honorary Doctorate from Leiden University, the Netherlands. To mark this memorable event, Leiden University founded the Mandela Scholarship Fund.  List of Medical Schools in South African

On receiving the award, President Mandela stated that it brought him not only great honour, but also great responsibility: “South Africans will in the coming years have to solve problems that you have faced before us.

We have to build many new houses and schools, extend health care still further, and deal with crime and corruption. These challenges are even greater than those we have already overcome, and we will need all the strength that we have, and that of our friends. A greater exchange of students will be enriching for both of our nations.On the one hand it will contribute to the development of our country and the rebirth of our continent. Scholarship Eligibility:

To eligible, applicants are to meet the following criteria:

• Permanent residents of South Africa.
• South African students, who intend to return to South Africa and contribute to national development after their studies at Leiden University.
• Motivated to upgrade or extend their knowledge in order to make a contribution towards the development of South Africa.
• Enrolled at a South African University.
• Students must be willing to return to South Africa after their studies.

Scholarship Benefits:

• Tuition fees
• Living allowance of € 1000 per month
• Insurance

Application Deadline: 1 April and 1 October.

Application Process:

Interested applicants should visit the Mandela Scholarship Fund for Undergraduate and Postgraduate Studies Application Portal to apply.

Applicants are to submit their completed scholarship application form as scanned email attachment to: scholarships@sea.leidenuniv.nl and attach the following documents:

• Exchange/study abroad admission letter from Leiden University
• Scholarship motivation letter.
• Recent transcript of records from your South African University.
• Up-to-date CV
• Photocopy of your valid passport(s).
• Two original letters of recommendation.
• Documentation showing the status of any grants you have applied for.
• Proof of sufficient funds to support yourself in the Netherlands as Mandela scholarship does not cover all expenses.
