What is Canada CARICOM Leadership Scholarships Program

The Canada CARICOM Leadership Scholarship is a leadership development scholarship offered by Global Affairs Canada and Caribbean Council for International Cooperation (CARICOM). The program offers Canadians, age 35 or under, from certain professional fields a one-year scholarship to study at an accredited university in any CARICOM member state. The scholarships are designed to increase Canadian influence in Caribbean and support the economic prosperity of Caribbean countries through skills training and enhanced expertise.

The Canada-CARICOM Leadership Scholarship will cover tuition fees, monthly stipend, insurance and travel costs to and from your host country. Applicants are encouraged to undertake a project that adds value to their own industry sector or brings more Canadian expertise into theirs.

Interested applicants should submit an Expression of Interest by June 30th 2022. The full application package is due no later than September 15th 2022.

Global Affairs Canada/ University of Toronto will make all final scholarship awards by March 15th 2023. A Canada-CARICOM Scholar is required to return to Canada following their studies in their host country, unless they have applied for an exception from Canadian Government’s Immigration Policy.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible to apply, applicants must meet all of the following criteria: be a citizen of one of Canada’s Caribbean Community (CARICOM) partner countries; have completed at least two years of a degree program at an accredited post-secondary institution; be entering their final year of study in one of four participating Canadian universities (University of Toronto, York University, McMaster University or Ryerson University); and have demonstrated leadership potential through involvement in extracurricular activities and/or professional work experience.

The program will cover tuition, on-campus room and board, textbooks and mandatory student fees. The scholarship also includes a living allowance to cover off-campus accommodation and other necessities (transportation, etc.). An allowance for travel to Canada is also provided. All awards are tenable at one of four participating universities: University of Toronto; York University; McMaster University; or Ryerson University.

Candidates may apply to one of three pathways: Arts, Business and Management or Science and Engineering.

How to Apply

The program is open to residents of member countries in CARICOM, who are pursuing a graduate or postgraduate degree at a Canadian institution. All applicants must be nominated by their home country’s ministry of education; once you have been selected to apply, you will be required to submit an application essay and complete an interview. Eligible candidates must be a citizen of one of CARICOM’s member countries and have been accepted by a Canadian institution. To apply, you will need to work with your home country’s ministry of education to nominate you as a candidate, then submit an application essay in response to a prompt provided by Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC). If your application is successful, you will be invited to an interview conducted at CIC headquarters in Ottawa.
